The inaugural session of the Ceylon assembly kicked off this Monday with the swearing in of the new Chief Minister of Ceylon- R. Wickremesinghe of the Ceylon People's Army. The first order of business for the House was the modification of the flag of Ceylon in order to give the new Commonwealth Territory a unique identity.
After this, the assembly discussed the issue of the loss of the port for trade. The assembly overwhelmingly voted in favour to expand the existing Colombo airport. The Bandaranaike International airport is the only airport in Ceylon and it caters to both domestic, international, cargo and military flights. This means that the airport is very overworked.
It has only a limited number of airlines flying out of it. Crown Air- The UKZ National Carrier and Air India- The South UKZ private carrier.
The Bill seeks to open up more runways and increase airport capacity and hangar capacity to facilitate cargo airlines and more passanger carriers in the airport. This move has been pushed by the Viceroy who was strongly opposed to depending on the Arveyrean province for trade but whose hands were tied till the Assembly was elected.
The Viceroy was angry with the centre for depending on the Arveyrean province for a trade port. He claimed that "The Prime Minister forced me to agree to the terms of the port lease deal. While i do agree that we need a port i could not help but be suspicsious of the Arveyreans. Largely because they seem to be a puppet nation controlled by Urbem Sol and whose government is easily swayed by popular rhetoric. Today i am not angry with the Arveyreans, i did not expect anything much from them. I am disappointed with the central government who failed to see the instability and risk in depending on the Arveyreans"
The PMO released a statement on the developments.
"The UKZ stands shocked and disappointed with the decision of the Arveyrean senate to revoke our acess to the port. We hope that in the future the government of Arveyres will reconsider and change their decision and try and give Zack-Arveyrean relations a chance. Ceylon will not suffer. The port deal was merely a back up. The Colombo Airport and the interim Royal Air Force base on the outsskirts of Colombo are sufficient for trade. the whole idea behind the request for a port was to try and grow relations with Arveyres. Now that our attempts have failed we hope that the Arveyreans will extend their hands for friendship in the future. Till then the UKZ will find it very difficult to do business with Arveyres as they have proved to be untrustworthy businesss partners and outright disrespectful when it comes to business deals and agreements. We are also examining the lagality of the revocation, and might take Arveyres to the ICJ for breaking in business deal and require compensation from the Arveyrean government for the same."
the Minister for External Affairs said that she was very disappointed in the behaviour of Arveyres and this decision "gives the impression that Arveyres is not truly independent but is being secretley controlled by Urbem Sol, we feel sorry for them. We have no plans on cancelling the Visa on Arrival deal for all Arveyrean tourists, whether they be on travel for pleasure or for business. We are not revoking this because we made a deal with Arveyres and we will stick to the deal."
