SULTAN IOANNIS MEETS KING FRIEDERICK WILHELM
Productive Discussion in the Palace Van Sondenburg-Sorenberg
Astana, New Tarajan: Sultan Ioannis IX Kallergis, Prince Chrysanthos and Prince Dimosthenis Kallergis, and several prominent courtiers of the Sultanate of Morea finally arrived in New Tarajan this morning after weeks of preliminary discussions and preparations. His Majesty the Sultan and his sons, the latter of whom have recently spent months at the court of King Friederick Wilhelm II of New Tarajan, prevailed on His Majesty the King to host a meeting between select members of both monarchs’ courts and governments, in order to clarify certain questions surrounding a new Tarajani law intended to stifle religious proselytizing and the use of religion in political discourse. After weeks of controversy surrounding this law, Sultan Ioannis came to New Tarajan in the hopes of easing the tension between two nations whose religious differences have put a serious strain on a military alliance that the Sultan is very keen to maintain.

The Tarajani delegation to the meeting included Prime Minister Ulrich De Witte-Beulen, Margrave of Beulen, and several prominent Landsraad ministers adhering to the Tarajani Sociaal-Democratische Partij (TSDP), whose leadership proposed and ardently supported the proselytizing ban in New Tarajan. However, Sultan Ioannis has made a point of framing this meeting as a friendly visit between colleagues and allies, and that the discussion itself was intended to solidify that alliance and friendship while the attendant politicians were left to work out the details. Whether or not that is true, the personal interview between these two royals and the Achaian princes who have so recently been made Tarajani dukes at the hand of King Friederick Wilhelm has added a fashionable mystique to a saga that has otherwise been fraught with depressing and often bloody news.

At the meeting’s conclusion, Sultan Ioannis was quick to speak with Morean media outlets, including the
Monitor, to reassure the Achaian people that the Christian population of New Tarajan had nothing to fear. “His Majesty the King was diligent in explaining how the finished law differs from its initial drafts, as well as the reports that have been presented to the international community and prompted such a violent reaction,” the Sultan reported. “As King Friederick Wilhelm has assured us in the past, and as he explained in detail to my colleagues and me today, the legislation he intends to sign is meant to preserve the religious freedom of every Tarajani subject. There are certainly elements to this law that I dislike, and I especially despise that the Christian religion was specifically targeted by those who initially proposed this legislation, but I am confident that His Majesty the King will be vigilant in preventing any abuse of power that may arise with the adoption of this law.”
However, Sultan Ioannis also acknowledged that he had presented suggestions of his own to the Tarajani government ministers and King Friederick Wilhelm, centered mainly on the jurisdictions of Princes Chrysanthos and Dimosthenis within the Tarajani hierarchy. “His Majesty the King gifted the Duchies of Creil and Nagele to Morea’s princes at the conclusion of the Grand Ball in Vieneskel,” the Sultan said. “While it was in large part a gesture to reflect the friendship of our two nations, the gift included lands as well as titles. I came to New Tarajan today to determine if it is feasible, and acceptable according to existing Tarajani law, for my sons to make use of this gift for the benefit and protection of the Christian population of New Tarajan. There were some concerns, of course,” the Sultan added, “but there will be no hindrance to hearing cathedral bells in these places in the very near future. My sons assure me that further construction will not be long behind. In the meantime, there will be two additional voices in Tarajani government, at least within the Duchy of Coervorden, that will stand in defense of those who love Christ.” The Duchy of Coervorden, in which the Duchies of Creil and Nagele reside, is a property owned directly by the King of New Tarajan, which is why King Friederick Wilhelm was able to provide lands from this Duchy as gifts to foreign guests, and furthermore makes King Friederick Wilhelm the direct overlord of the minor dukes, including Princes Chrysanthos and Dimosthenis, who possess properties within Coervorden.

“My sons will do their utmost to protect the Christian minority in New Tarajan if the need arises,” assured Sultan Ioannis. “However, I truly believe that His Majesty the King will make this concern superfluous in due course. Having spoken with him at length and in detail, I am more confident than ever that the Christian people of New Tarajan have a bright future ahead of them, and that this new law—regardless of the obvious anti-Christian rhetoric of its proposers and initial adherents—will have its own part to play in keeping Tarajani Christians safe from oppression by their neighbors within and without the Kingdom.” Referring specifically to clarifications from King Friederick Wilhelm in the past regarding the decriminalization of blasphemy and the restriction of religious influences in politics, Sultan Ioannis said, “Religious minorities must take care to watch their words when their more populous neighbors write and enforce legislation to prevent insults aimed at their own religion. Any such legislation in New Tarajan would only act to oppress the Christian minority of the Kingdom, and as such we should be grateful that it will not only be repealed by this new legislation, but that this legislation will prevent the Tarajani government from applying religious precepts to any of its future legislation, thereby preventing the government from drafting new legislation intended to restrict the freedom of speech on the basis of religion.”
Sultan Ioannis’s positive outlook is not shared by other Christian groups, either in Morea or elsewhere. Christian populations both within New Tarajan and around the world have protested against the adoption of this law, with often violent and sometimes deadly results. Christian leaders have also voiced serious opposition, with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of New Tarajan recently announcing that it would challenge the law’s adoption in Tarajani court. In Morea, as well, Bishop Akakios IV Doukas has campaigned for many weeks to pressure Sultan Ioannis to take a firm stand against this law, and will certainly do his best to rally his congregation in Mystras against the Sultan’s conciliatory decision today. In New Tarajan, Sultan Ioannis presented an image of unconcern about the possible resistance he would meet when returning home. “My sons and I have come here not merely to complain to His Majesty the King, but to determine exactly what the Tarajani government proposes to do, and to determine if there are ways to alleviate any problems our brethren in New Tarajan may encounter as a result of this proposal. As a result, I am now better informed about the purpose of this legislation than ever before, and we now have a path by which the people of this Kingdom who know and love our Savior can reliably seek aid against the possibility of oppression in the future. I am content in the knowledge that I have done what I can for my brethren in this place, and that I have done so with the good will of my friend King Friederick Wilhelm and with the blessings of God. Bishop Akakios will find that I have no regrets regarding my time here.”
Sultan Ioannis is scheduled to return to Morea in the next couple of days, while Prince Chrysanthos and Prince Dimosthenis remain in New Tarajan to tour their new holdings in the Duchy of Coervorden. According to His Anointed Majesty, both princes are eager to begin working on the establishment of new seats for the worship of God in New Tarajan.
